LINCOLN – Neither of the top two seeds were playing at the Pinnacle Bank Arena Saturday, instead #3 Ponca matched up with #5 Neligh-Oakdale.
Early on Ponca led 14-7 after one quarter of play. Neligh-Oakdale countered with a 12-7 second quarter, but the Indians led the Warriors at half 21-19. In the low scoring third, Ponca won the quarter 7-5 before holding on for the 24-21 fourth. Final of 52-45 found Ponca winning their second state championship in school history to finish the year 27-4 while Neligh-Oakdale fell to 26-4 as state runner-up.
Ponca was led in scoring by junior Logan Kingsbury with 16 points, who was 10-16 from the foul line. Freshman Carter Kingsbury followed with 13 points, going 3-6 from behind the arc.
As a team, Ponca shot 13-33 (39.4%) from the floor, 5-11 (45.5%) from behind the arc and 21-30 (70%) from the foul line.
Seniors Grant White and Tyson Belitz each scored 14 points to lead Neligh-Oakdale in scoring.
The Warriors shot 14-39 (35.9%) from the floor, 7-23 (30.4%) from the 3-point line and 10-11 (90.9%) from the charity stripe.
