WAKEFIELD – The 2017 Max Greve Wood Bat Tournament began play Friday from Eaton Field in Wakefield.
Three games were held to open the weekend tourney, as the Wakefield Post 81 Junior American Legion baseball team took part in two of them.
From the opening contest, Hartington jumped out front 4-0 after two innings. Wakefield Post 81 added a run in the fifth to trail 4-1. Both teams scored a run in the sixth while Wakefield won the seventh, 2-1, but lost the game 6-4.
Justin Erb paced Wakefield with three singles while Lukas Oswald added a single and RBI.
Parker Lehmkuhl suffered the loss in four innings allowing four earned runs off of four hits while striking out two batters and walking another two. Gabe Peitz worked an inning and a third allowing a run off of one hit while striking out two batters and walking one. Joseph Janssen pitched an inning and two-thirds allowing one run while striking out one batter.

During the second contest of the night, Beresford (South Dakota) recorded two runs in the first inning to lead over Wakefield Post 81. Beresford then added a run in the second, six more in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth to win 15-0. With the two losses, Wakefield Post 81 is now 6-11 on the season.
Lehmkuhl doubled during one of his two hits while Julio Sanchez added two singles.
Oswald suffered the loss in two and two-thirds allowing nine earned runs off of nine hits while walking five batters. Janssen worked the final two and a third allowing six runs (four earned) off of nine hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

Wakefield Post 81 will next compete in the Pool A third place game held in Wayne (correction from morning sports) at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 11.
Third third game on Friday was a Seniors Division game. Bruning-Davenport-Shickley won over Beresford 5-3.
