WAYNE – The Dirt Devil softball teams took part in several games around northeast Nebraska Tuesday evening.
Road games found the Dirt Devil 10’s falling to the Norfolk Golden Girls 6-5 as the 14’s were swept by Fremont Force Black by the scores of 19-4 and 13-10. The 10’s fall to 6-9 on the season while the 14’s are now 6-10.
From the 10’s contest, the Dirt Devils led 5-0 after the top of the third inning. But, the Golden Girls brought in five runs in the home half of the third and scored another run in the fourth to win 6-5.
Delaney Kruse doubled while Kierah Haase singled and each drove in a run. Rylin Hill suffered the loss in two and two-thirds allowing six runs (three earned) off of five hits while striking out two batters and walking six.
During the 14’s double header, Kayla Fleming, Nikki Fertig and Chloe Klug each singled for Wayne. Tori Ostrand added a double during the 19-4 defeat.
From the second game, it was Klug and Fertig each accounting for two singles each in the 13-10 loss. Mikaela McManigal, Aliah Schulz and Alex Harrell also singled while Fleming recorded a double.
From the Summer Sports Complex, the Dirt Devil 12’s split with Tri-State Pride, winning 6-5 but dropping the second contest 9-4 while the 16/18’s swept West Point by the scores of 11-0 and 7-5. The 14’s sit 9-4 while the 16/18’s are 13-1-1.
From the 14’s double header, Wayne used a four-run first inning to lead early. Tri-State Pride took a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, before Wayne scored two runs to win 6-5.
Kendall Dorey recorded a pair of singles and one RBI while Taytum Sweetland singled and drove in two runs. Dorey picked up the win in six innings allowing four runs (one earned) off of one hit while striking out 11 batters and walking four.
During the second contest, it was the Tri-State Pride leading 5-2 after the first inning. Wayne then lost the second inning, 4-2, and dropped the game, 9-4.
Brooklyn Kruse doubled and drove in two runs while Courtney Brink singled. Brianna Nissen suffered the loss in an inning allowing nine runs (six earned) off of two hits while striking out one batter and walking five. Kruse worked a third of an inning walking one batter in nine pitches.
Moving into the 16/18’s home double header, Wayne went off for a seven-run first inning. The Dirt Devils then scored a run in the second and three more in the third to win 11-0.
Kennedy Maly was the team leader with a homerun and three RBI’s. Grace Lindsay doubled and drove in a run. Ashten Gibson picked up the win in three innings allowing one hit while striking out six batters. Courtney Bokemper worked the final inning tossing 17 pitches.
From the final game of the evening, West Point led 3-0 after two innings. The Dirt Devil 16/18’s then poured in seven runs in the fourth before giving up two more in the fifth to win 7-5.
Sidney Biggerstaff recorded a single, double and two RBI’s to pace the team. Abby Ankeny added a homerun to go along with two RBI’s.
Jamie Gamble worked the first inning and a third allowing three runs (one earned) off of three hits while striking out and walking a batter. Gibson pitched two and two-thirds to account for the win allowing a hit while striking out seven batters. Bokemper came in for the save in the final inning allowing two earned runs off of one hit while striking out two batters.
Dirt Devil softball teams are off Wednesday, but the 16/18’s will visit Wisner for a double header at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8.
Two of the four ages groups will compete in their District Tournament this weekend as well. The 14’s will take part in the Class C District in Blair while the 10’s will be in West Point for their Class C District both on Friday, June 9 – Sunday, June 11
The 12 & Under as well as the 18 & Under softball teams will compete in the Golden Girls Tournament at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk Friday, June 9 – Sunday, June 11.
