Two Blue Devil Athletes Sign Wednesday To Join Wayne State College

WAYNE – The Wayne State College women’s cross country and track and field team as well as the women’s basketball program will gain some local talent come next year.

Seniors Andrea Torres and Kylie Hammer of Wayne High School will become Wildcats and remain in town while attending Wayne State College.

Torres will join the women’s cross country and track & field team. She stated she originally just wanted to attend Wayne State College before head coach for cross country/track & field Marlon Brink contacted Torres through social media.

She said, “‘oh yep that’s me and I would love too. “It’s a great opportunity and I think it’d be a lot of fun to run for them. I love running so to get to keep running competitively is going to be awesome.”

The Wayne High girls cross country team finished fourth in districts with 61 points. Torres placed third in a time of 20:53 while placing 12th at state (20:56).

Torres plans on majoring in Spanish Secondary Education.

Hammer signed her national letter of intent to play for the Wildcat women’s basketball team under head coach Chris Kielsmeier. Not only just being close to home, but Hammer added what she’s most excited about to be a Wildcat.

“They’re a very fast-paced team and they all want to work hard,” Hammer added. “The coach cares about them as people and as basketball players.”

The Wayne High girls basketball team ended their 2016-17 season with an 18-7 record after falling to Pierce in the Class C1-7 Subdistrict Tournament.

Individually as a junior, Hammer led the team in scoring average with 21.6 points per game as well as assists per game (3.0) and second in rebounds per game (5.8).
