NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – Defending champions Waverly scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eight inning to shock Wayne, 4-3, in the first round of the 2017 Class B Junior Legion State Baseball Tournament in Nebraska City.
Wayne trailed 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning when Tyler Gilliland singled off of Ben Carter, sending the game into extra innings. The Post 43 Juniors trailed 3-0 the majority of the game.
It was the second-straight year Waverly beat Wayne in the first round of the state tournament. The two teams met last summer in Sidney, Neb.
Waverly relief pitcher Connor Johnson got the win. Maverick Wylder started the game, throwing five and a third innings, allowing one run, three hits, striking out six and walking one.
Wayne starting pitcher Trevor DeBoer went seven innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three in a no-decision.
Blake Bartos and Gunnar Jorgensen each collected multiple hits for Wayne. Josh Lutt, Tyler Gilliland, and Reid Korth each drove in one run.
Porter Burkland and Andrew Moylan led Waverly with multiple hits.
Waverly (30-9) continues their title defense on Sunday night at 8:00. They will play host Nebraska City (28-2) at Clemmy Holmes Field. The game will air live on B103 (103.1 FM, B103.fm and the B103 app).
Wayne (17-12) plays Alliance (30-9) in an elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday. The live broadcast will be available on 98.9 FM, AM 1590 in Wayne, also on waynedailynews.com.
