WAYNE – Two very good match-ups took place Friday night in Wayne as the Blue Devils hosted Battle Creek in their home opener.
Starting with the girls game, Battle Creek led for majority of the game including a three point lead at halftime, 25-22, but the Lady Blue Devils of Wayne held their own and were finally able to grab a lead midway through the 3rd quarter on Friday. In a back-and-forth contest the entire way, Wayne was able to pull out the 69-57 victory over Battle Creek (0-1) to notch their first win on the season.
Both girls and boys teams for Wayne tipped off their season on Thursday night against South Sioux City where the girls fell to South Sioux 78-48 and the Wayne boy’s started their season with a road win 59-49 on Thursday.
In Friday’s game vs. Battle Creek, senior Kylie Hammer led all scorers with 24 points and 7 rebounds while sophomore Frankie Klausen followed with 16 points in the win. The Braves were led by sophomore Riley Seifert who finished the game with 11 points.
In the boys game, both Wayne and Battle Creek poured it on Friday night as both teams shot the ball very well and were tied at halftime, 32-32. Battle Creek was able to hang on in a tight game, 68-61 to open their season with a win while Wayne dropped to 1-1.
The game featured two high scoring outputs from Wayne senior Jack Evetovich who led all scorers with 27 points and senior Devon Beckman from Battle Creek scored 25 points to help his team get the win.
Both Battle Creek girls and boys will be at home on Saturday night as they host Humphrey/LHF and both Wayne teams will take on Logan View-Scribner-Snyder on Tuesday, December 5.
