SPENCER, IA – The Blue and White Didget baseball teams combined to make their travel team during a tournament this past weekend.
Wayne Didgets went 4-1 in Spencer, Iowa on Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4. They were also crowned champions of the tourney.
The Didgets competed in three games on Saturday.
Wayne won the first game against Estherville, 8-0. Devin Anderson had a strong game on the mound as he struck out nine batters while only allowing one hit. Offensively, the team recorded 11 hits.
During the second game, Wayne picked up another 8-0, this time over Carroll. Gavin Redden led the way on the mound with eight strikeouts and one hit allowed while Jamison Meyer worked an inning striking out one batter. As a team, Wayne picked up seven hits.
From the final game of day one against Sergeant Bluff, the Didgets suffered their only loss on the weekend of 11-5. Sergeant Bluff outhit the Didgets 11-8 as Colson Nelson recorded two strikeouts and Jase Dean added another on the mound.
Moving into Sunday, the Wayne Didget travel team held off Mason City 5-4. Devin Anderson struck out five batters while Gavin Redden added another four k’s on the mound. The team also recorded nine hits.
From the final game, Wayne defeated Lemars 10-5 in the championship game. As a team, Wayne recorded 13 hits. Colson Nelson, Jase Dean and Gavin Redden all struck out two batters.
Overall, the Wayne Didgets travel team accounted for 48 hits, 36 runs scored and 36 strikeouts.
The Wayne Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 17-18 at the Summer Sports Complex.
