MARIETTA, GA – After falling short in 7’s earlier this Spring, the Wayne State College Women were finally able to capture their seventh national title over the weekend.
From Life University in Marietta, Georgia, the 2017 Fall National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) 15’s National Tournament came to a close.
During the first semi-final match on Saturday, Wayne State College dominated Gustavus Adolphus College, leading 57-0 at the half before winning 78-7.
The second semi-final score found Bentley University defeating York College of Pennsylvania, 38-19.
Sunday afternoon’s 15-on-15 National Championship saw the Wildcat women with a slim, 17-12 halftime lead. According to the NSCRO Facebook page, WSC used tries from Leanna Rosberg, Julia Baxter and Brook Hoesing with a conversion kick from Sam Warneke. Wayne State College then outscored Bentley University, 29-14 for a final of 46-26. The Wildcat women’s rugby team defends their 15’s National Title and have now been crowned champions for the fourth time, seventh overall.
WSC won the 15-on-15 National Tournament back-to-back in 2012-2013 and again 2016-2017 while being crowned 7-on-7 champs three years in a row between 2014-2016 in the Spring. The ‘Cats also capped off a perfect season, going 20-0 with nine out of the 15 starters on the pitch being freshman or sophomores.
York College of PA and Gustavus Adolphus College were tied at 36 all and took part in two, 10-minute extra periods before York College won 43-36 to be crowned third place victors.
Leanna Rosberg was crowned MVP of the Tournament while Sam Warneke was awarded one of the four Heart & Soul recipients from Wayne State College. Other Wildcats listed on the All-Championship 15’s Team along with Rosberg and Warneke were Julia Baxter, Anna Fleecs, Turner MacPhee and Shelbi Brown.
Wayne State College is scheduled to return Monday afternoon and will have a more locked down time after they make a stop in Kentucky.
