WAYNE – Two competitions into the season, the Wayne State College Club wrestling team hosted their first of two events coming to the WSC Recreation Center this past weekend.
On Friday and Saturday, November 17-18, National Collegiate Wrestling Association took over the west end of the Rec. Teams such as Colorado State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Iowa Wrestling Club and Wayne State took to the mat.
The Wildcats opened Friday night with a dual against Colorado State University where the Rams defeated WSC, 28-24.
Coach Greg Vander Weil said the ‘Cats wrestled very well.
“You know us coaches can always re-wrestle the dual and figure out how to win it,” said Vander Weil. “But, the bottom line is the big old University Rams got the best of us.”
Overall results found Colorado State University (71 points) coming out with a first-place finish in bracket wrestling on Saturday. Wayne State College followed in second with 56 points, Winona State placed third with 18 points just edging University of Iowa Club Wrestling who took fourth with 17 points and Missouri S & T rounded out the five teams with 10 points.
There were 12 Wildcats who wrestled on the mat this weekend.
Individual results for Wayne State College saw two first place finishes from Alejandro Martinez at 125 and Spencer Trout at 184.
Levi Honeywell placed second at 141 with Matthew Reeves following in third during the same weight class. Tommy Nelson took third (125), Hunter Weiss (third – 149), Ethan Fitzler (fourth – 149), Terry Stephens (third – 157), Gerald Kenkel (fourth – 165) and Sean Krebbs (fourth – 235).
Next up for Wayne State College will be the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday, December 2. The ‘Cats will host their second and final competition of the year on February 24 during the GPC NCWA National Qualifier on the west end of the WSC Recreation Center.
“We’ll have a major tournament looking to qualify as many Wildcats for the National Tournament as we can in March,” Vander Weil added.
