WAYNE – As NSIC basketball teams are several weeks into their season the indoor track & field season will get underway for Wayne State College Friday for their lone competition in the month of December.
The league office in Burnsville, Minnesota announced Thursday the 2018 NSIC Women’s and Men’s Indoor Track and Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Wildcat women are tied for 11th with Southwest Minnesota State of the 15 teams totaling 65 points. Minnesota State-Mankato is selected as the team to beat with 13 first-place votes (194), followed by University of Mary (183) and Augustana (159), each receiving one first-place vote.
Senior Michaela Dendinger was tabbed the Preseason Field Athlete of the Year for the conference and Wildcat Player to Watch as well as sophomore Joan Jelimo as the Track Athlete to Watch for WSC in voting by league coaches.
Dendinger, a senior thrower from Coleridge (Hartington Public HS), was an All-NSIC performer last year in two events, placing second in the weight throw (63′ 4 ¼”) and third in the shot put (46′ ¾”). She was an NCAA Indoor National qualifier in both events for a second straight year and named USTFCCCA Second Team All-American and All-Region in both events.
Jelimo, a sophomore transfer from Gillette College in Wyoming, will compete in middle distance running events for the Wildcats this season. She was fifth in the 800 meter run (2:23) at the Region 11 meet at Gillette.
The Wildcat men are selected to finish seventh, receiving 50 points among the 11 teams. Minnesota State-Mankato is also the team to beat on the men’s side with 10-first place votes (100), followed by Augustana (85) in second and Sioux Falls with the remaining first-place vote (72).
Senior Antoine Bardou and junior Robert Sullivan were listed as Wildcats to Watch in the NSIC this season.
Bardou, a senior middle-distance runner from St. Chely D’Apcher, France (De Cha Depepchur HS), was named NSIC Men’s Indoor Newcomer of the Year last season after winning the 1,000-meter run (2:28.95) and placing fourth in the one mile run (4;13.69) while setting new school records in both events.
Sullivan, a junior from Bennington, (Omaha Burke HS), was the NSIC champion last year in the heptathlon with a new WSC school record point total of 5,141. He also placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles and was an NCAA Indoor National qualifier in the heptathlon placing 12th at nationals to earn USTFCCCA Second Team All-American honors.
Wayne State College opens the indoor track and field season Friday, December 1 at the South Dakota State Holiday Open in Brookings, South Dakota.
