Wildcat Softball Holds Off Late Rally From Upper Iowa During Game One, Shutout In Second Contest

WAYNE – After posting a 3-3 record over the recent six-game conference road trip, the Wayne State College softball team was back at home Tuesday afternoon.

From the Pete Chapman Softball Complex, WSC played host to the Upper Iowa University Peacocks.

Wayne State started strong early scoring four runs in the first inning, one in the second and two more in the third. Upper Iowa cut into the deficit with two runs in the fourth while the ‘Cats answered with a run in the sixth. The Peacocks brought in three runs in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as WSC won 8-5.

It was a single kind of day, as WSC recorded 13 singles. Senior Monique Alyea paced the ‘Cats with four hits and two RBI’s. Junior Katelyn Wobken added a pair of hits while senior Melanie Alyea and sophomore Abbie Hix both tacked on two hits and one RBI.

Sophomore Riley Vanderveen picked up the win (2-11) in five innings allowing two earned runs off of nine hits while walking one batter. Junior Nataliah Hopkins pitched two innings allowing three earned runs off of seven hits while striking out one batter.

During the second contest, it was Upper Iowa scoring single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to win 3-0. With the split, WSC is now 11-33 (5-15 NSIC) and Upper Iowa sits 16-26 (8-12 NSIC).

Monique Alyea and junior Rachel Shumaker each recorded two singles. Freshman Jenna Stewart, Wobken and Hix also singled for WSC.

Hopkins suffered the complete game loss (9-18) in seven innings allowing three earned runs off of six hits while striking out and walking one batter each.

The Wildcat softball team has five double headers remaining on their schedule. WSC will visit Bemidji State Saturday, April 22 and travel to Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, April 23 at 1/3 p.m. both days.
