MOORHEAD – The Wayne State College softball team took to the road Friday afternoon.
From the MSU Moorhead Softball Field in Moorhead, Minnesota, the Dragons played host to WSC.
Wayne State College jumped out front with a pair of runs in the second and one run in the third to lead 3-0. MSU Moorhead added three runs in the third and a run in the fourth to lead 4-3. The Dragons then added to their lead with a 3-2 fifth inning before the ‘Cats recorded three runs in the top of the seventh to win 8-7.
Junior Jordyn Breitbarth recorded a single, triple and homerun to go along with two RBI’s. Senior Monique Alyea added a homer for one of her two hits while adding a RBI and senior Melanie Alyea tacked on two singles while junior Rachel Shumaker tripled.
Junior Nataliah Hopkins picked up the win (8-17) in four innings allowing four earned runs off of eight hits while walking and striking out one batter each. Sophomore Riley Vanderveen started the game and pitched three innings allowing three earned runs off of eight hits.

During the second contest, both teams were held scoreless during the opening three innings. Wayne State then scored single runs in the fourth and fifth while adding three runs in the sixth to lead 5-0. The Dragon were able to only score one run in the sixth as WSC won 5-1. Wayne State College improved to 10-30 (4-12 NSIC) while the Dragons fell back to 8-25 (3-13 NSIC).
Junior Katelyn Wobken recorded a three-run homer while adding a single to lead WSC at the plate. Shumaker doubled during one of her three hits while adding two RBI’s. Breitbarth singled and tripled as Monique Alyea doubled.
Hopkins picked up the complete game win (9-17) in seven innings allowing an earned run off of seven hits while striking out three batters and walking two.
