BROOKINGS, SD – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s track & field team got their first competition under their belt and the only action of the month of December this past weekend.
From the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, South Dakota, Wayne State College joined several schools during the South Dakota State Preseason Open.
On the women’s side, Wildcat throwers reached NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the shot put Friday evening. Senior Michaela Dendinger came in second (49’ 1 ½”) as redshirt freshman Tia Jones followed in fifth place (44’ 3 ½”). Dendinger added another NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw at fourth place among some top Division I talent (61’ 6 ¼”).
Freshman Hanna Lazure tied for fifth in the high jump (5’ 1”) and sophomore Kim Lowman finished sixth in the one-mile run (5:52.76).
Moving into the men’s results, junior Robert Sullivan broke the school record in the high jump which highlighted a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks for the Wildcats.
Sullivan placed second in the high jump at 6’ 8 ¼” to set a new school record, breaking the previous school record by a quarter inch from Joe Ortmeier (1981) and Sam Haase (2007). He also finished fourth in the long jump (23’ ¾”) as senior Derek Lahm came in third during the long jump (23’ 8 ¼”), just ahead of Sullivan.
Senior Brady Metz recorded a third-place mark in the triple jump (46’ 10 ¼”) and sixth in the long jump (22’ 4 1/4”) as junior Clay Kramper took fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.21) and ninth in the 60-meter dash (7.09).
Other top Wildcat results came from junior Isaias Solorio taking fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16:33.8), sophomore Nathan Pearson sixth in the 800-mtere run (2:02.11), sophomore Habib Jallow sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53), junior Richard Sweeney ninth in the weight throw (52’ 8”) and freshman Brock Hegarty ninth in the one-mile (4:41.79).
The Wildcat 4X400-meter relay team of Jallow, freshman Preston Davis, freshman Kyle Lowe and senior Brandon Marker took ninth (3:29.22).
The Wayne State College track & field team will continue their season in 2018 during the UNL Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln on Friday and Saturday, January 12-13.
