PUEBLO, CO – #12 Wayne State College was back in Colorado for a pair of games Friday night.
WSC competed in the CSU Pueblo Tournament and took on the host team, CSU Pueblo in the opening match.
CSU Pueblo won the first and third sets as WSC was victorious in the second, fourth and fifth sets to win in five sets (23-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 15-12).
Individually, sophomore Katie Stephens posted a double-double with a team-high in kills, 14 and 11 digs. Junior Megan Gebhardt also posted a double-double with 43 set assists and 16 digs. Redshirt freshman Jaci Brahmer added 13 kills while junior Maria Wortmann tacked on another 12. Sophomore Haley Kauth paced the team in digs with 32 followed by freshman Hope Carter with another 22.
WSC outhit CSU Pueblo, .137 to .102 while recording seven aces and 14 team blocks.
From the second match of the day, Wayne State College picked up a four-set victory over Texas A&M – Commerce (25-13, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23).
Senior Erin Gross led WSC in the second match with 13 kills, followed by nine from Stephens who also posted a team-high in digs with 17 while Wortmann tacked on eight kills. Gebhardt posted 37 set assists as Kauth added 15 digs.
WSC outhit Texas A&M-Commerce, .165 to .122 while picking up five services aces and 13 team blocks.
The 12th ranked Wayne State College volleyball team is now 5-1 on the season and will take on UC-Colorado Springs at 11 a.m. and Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 in Colorado Springs, Colorado Saturday.
