Wildcat Volleyball Remains #22, Currently In A Three-Way Tie For Sixth In NSIC Play

WAYNE – Even with a three-match road win streak last week, the 22nd-ranked Wayne State College Wildcat volleyball team remains the same going into the final week of the regular season.

The most recent AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll was announced Monday afternoon. The Wildcats received 213 points in voting conducted by various Division II coaches from across the country. This also marks the 113th consecutive national ranking for the WSC volleyball program dating back to September 28, 2009.

#22 Wayne State College swept the season series with then #16 Augustana last Tuesday (3-1) before picking up 3-0 sweeps over Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston this past weekend. The ‘Cats are 18-10 overall (11-7 NSIC), finishing off the regular season 8-5 on the road, 4-2 in neutral competition and are currently 6-3 at Rice Auditorium going into their final home matches.

The Wildcats are in a three-way tie for sixth in the league with Upper Iowa and Augustana not counting tie-breakers. St. Cloud State is 8-10 in NSIC play, sitting ninth as the first team out. Only the top eight teams will play in the single elimination NSIC Volleyball Tournament starting next Wednesday, November 15 as well as Saturday and Sunday, November 18-19.

WSC will have their season come to an end this Friday, November 10 hosting St. Cloud State at 6 p.m. and #6 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, November 11 at 4 p.m. Two of the seven conference losses for Wayne State College came on September 22-23 in Duluth (3-1) and St. Cloud (3-0).

Other NSIC teams ranked and receiving votes: #1 Concordia-St. Paul (40 first-place votes) remained at the top spot, #4 Southwest Minnesota State fell two spots, #6 Minnesota Duluth jumped three spots, #7 Northern State remained the same, #15 Winona State remained the same, #18 Augustana dropped two spots and Upper Iowa fell just outside the top 25 earning 63 points in voting while being listed on two or more ballots.
