ABERDEEN, SD – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams battled with a pair of Top 25 teams on the road Friday night.
From the Barnett Center, the Northern State University Wolves played host to WSC.
During the women’s game, #20 Northern State University took control early with a 19-14 first quarter and 22-14 second quarter. NSU held a 41-28 lead at the half. The Wolves saw their lead grow at most by 20 points as WSC was able to cut into the deficit down nine, but with 10 seconds remaining. Wayne State College outscored Northern, 43-40 in the second half, but NSU used their first half lead to win 81-71. Northern State improves to 14-2 (10-1 NSIC) as the Wildcats had their four-game winning streak snapped to now sit 14-5 (8-3 NSIC).
Senior Maggie Schulte paced WSC in scoring with 22 points followed by another 18 by senior Paige Ballinger. Senior Kacie O’Connor, freshman Brittany Bongartz and Schulte each grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
WSC shot 23-60 (38.3%) from the field, 6-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc and 19-23 (82.6%) from the foul line.
From the men’s contest, #9 Northern State took a 33-27 lead into the locker room. Wayne State College would outscore the Wolves in the second half 42-38, but again fall on a buzzer beater. WSC took a 69-68 lead before NSU hit a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining to win 71-69. Northern State has now won 16 straight to improve to 17-1 (11-0 NSIC) on the season while the Wildcat men fall to 10-9 (5-6 NSIC). WSC is also 1-6 in games decided by five points or less.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by junior Trevin Joseph Jr. with 16 points as junior Kendall Jacks tacked on 10 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Tony Bonner and junior Vance Janssen each tallied nine points.
The ‘Cats shot 25-55 (45.5%) from the floor, 3-10 (30%) from the three-point line and 16-21 (76.2%) from the charity stripe.
