Wildcat Women Hold On For Single Digit Win, Men Dominate Crookston in Second Half

CROOKSTON, MN – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams closed out their NSIC North Division road trip Saturday evening.

From Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minnesota, the Golden Eagles played host to WSC.

In the women’s contest, Wayne State College jumped out front 20-13 in the opening quarter while Minnesota Crookston took the second quarter, 10-7. At the half, WSC led 27-23. The ‘Cats then kept the lead in tact with third quarter scoring of 15-14 and 25-23 in the fourth. Final found Wayne State College winning 67-60 to improve to 20-6 (14-4 NSIC) as the Golden Eagles fell to 6-16 (6-12 NSIC).

Senior Kacie O’Connor led WSC in scoring with 16 points as junior Andrea Larson and freshman Erin Norling both added 10 points. Senior Paige Ballinger grabbed a team-high six boards to go along with eight points.

WSC went 23-53 (43.4%) from the floor, 7-13 (53.8%) from behind the arc and 14-20 (70%) from the charity stripe. The ‘Cats recorded 13 assists to 12 turnovers while adding four blocked shots and 10 steals.

During the men’s game, Minnesota Crookston held a one-point lead heading into the locker room, 35-34. It was back-and-forth early in the second half as the Wildcat men erupted for a 51-39 final 20 minutes of play. WSC won 85-74 to improve to 13-13 (8-10 NSIC) as Minnesota Crookston fell to 9-15 (6-12 NSIC).

Junior Trevin Joseph Jr. posted another career-high with 26 points, 50 points for the weekend to pace WSC in scoring. Junior Kendall Jacks added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds while both sophomore Tony Bonner and senior Austin Esters tallied 12 points.

WSC went 29-57 (50.9 %) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from the three-point line and 23-25 (92%) from the foul line. The Cats recorded 12 assists to 14 turnovers while adding one blocked shot and nine turnovers.

Wayne State College will close out their home weekend with Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, February 9 as Sioux Falls comes to town on Saturday, February 10.
