Winnebago Holds On To Claim Conference Title

LAUREL – For the third time this season, Winnebago and Ponca took their rivalry to the court and this time it was for the conference title.

Winnebago (20-2) beat Ponca back on December 29 in the Wisner Holiday Tournament, 60-57, and Ponca (17-4) got their revenge back on January 14, 53-48.

After coming off a 95-50 victory against Walthill Saturday night, ‘Bago looked a little sluggish out of the gates, but with the help of senior sensation David Wingett, were able to pull away in the end and claim the Lewis & Clark Conference title 51-41.

Wingett finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win while teammate D’Von Lapointe contributed with 12 points.

Despite playing with foul trouble majority of the second half, junior Logan Kingsbury led Ponca with 15 points in the loss.

Ponca will have a few days off before playing back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Homer and Wayne.

Winnebago will take on Wakefield Tuesday before heading down to the Heartland Hoops Classic to take on the defending Class C-2 champs in Hastings St. Cecilia on Saturday.
