Wynot Wins Conference Title On Buzzer-Beater

LAUREL – Carissa Kuchta made a three-pointer as time expired to carry Wynot (16-3) to a 44-42 win over Ponca (17-4).

Ponca led by four points with under 30 seconds remaining. Wynot’s Cortney Arkfeld used a shot fake to get open for a baseline jumper that cut the Indian lead to 42-41. The Blue Devils then fouled Elizabeth Watchorn sending her to the free throw line for a one-and-one. She missed the front end and Mikayla Lange grabbed the rebound with five seconds remaining. Lange fell down and Kuchta grabbed the loose ball streaking down the right side of the court. The senior launched a one-handed shot from comfortably beyond the three-point line and sank it as the buzzer sounded.

The defenses of both teams dominated throughout the game with each forcing more than 15 turnovers. Ponca led for most of the final three quarters save for one brief stretch to start the fourth. Their biggest lead was eight points.

Next, Ponca hosts Wayne and Wynot travels to Irene-Wakonda, South Dakota.
