UPDATE: Wind-fueled Fires Challenge Northeast Nebraska Crews

MADISON - High winds and dry conditions challenged northeast Nebraska firefighters battling field fires Wednesday afternoon. Numerous fire crews were called out to a massive fire northeast of Madison at about 4 p.m. Flames could be seen along 558 Avenue for about a one-mile stretch between 833 and 834 Roads. Crews from Norfolk, Madison, Battle Creek, Stanton and Humphrey could be seen along with area farmers trying to control the flames, which were being fanned by wind gusts as high as 45 miles per hour. Madison Fire Chief John Bomar says firefighters remained on scene well into the evening hours. He says the cause of the fire is still being investigated. In addition, he says the towns of Madison and Battle Creek are denying all burn permits until the area gets more rain.

WINSIDE - Fire officials were also called out to a field fire elsewhere in northeast Nebraska Wednesday. Crews from Winside, Carroll and Hoskins were dispatched to a smaller field fire a little more than a mile west of Winside at about 3 p.m. High winds caused a controlled burn to swell near a farm residence. There were no reports of injuries related to the incident.
