NECC to Build New On-Campus Student Hosing Facility
NORFOLK - Last fall, officials with Northeast Community College announced their intentions to investigate the possibility for a public private partnership for additional student housing facilities at their Norfolk campus. Dr. Michael Chipps, NECC President, announced during last weeks Board of Governors meeting that that the public private partnership would be too costly, and the college will instead look into financing the project through the issuance of bonds
Dr. Chipps: "We want to ensure that if we're going to go into some kind of financing for this operation, that when it's passed to the students it would be affordable for them. That's what's important to our board is that accessibility and affordability both on tuition and the services we provide, it's very important."
Chipps said that the college will be issuing a request for qualifications for the project in the near term future, the project will include the housing facility, as well as, additional cafeteria space for students.
For the fall 2013 semester, more than 715 students applied for 350 available spots in NECC's two on campus dorms.
Construction on the new residence hall could begin later this year with occupancy by January 2016.
