Funeral services for Myron James “Mike” Qualset, age 93, of Tilden, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Leon Rosenthal will officiate, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Tilden.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden.
Mike died Sunday, September 3, 2017, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, Nebraska.
Myron James “Mike” Qualset died Sunday, September 3, 2017, at Community Pride Care Home in Battle Creek, Nebraska at the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 18 days. He was born October 16, 1923, to Gunder H. and Sophie (Gladem) Qualset on a farm near Closter, several miles southwest of Tilden, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at North Branch Lutheran Church. Mike grew up on the family farm and attended country school and Closter school through eleventh grade. He lived in Norfolk with his maternal grandparents and attended Norfolk High School his senior year, playing on its basketball team. Mike graduated from Norfolk High School in 1941. On June 27, 1948, he married Ruth A. Magwire at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilden, Nebraska. To this union two children were born: Rita Jean and Ronn Myron.
Mike and Ruth managed the Phillips 66 Station on Highway 275 in Tilden for thirty years before Mike’s retirement in 1985. After retiring, Mike played a lot of golf, even proudly scoring a hole-in-one with his five wood on number six at the Antelope Country Club near Neligh. He also enjoyed following the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He and Ruth spent countless retirement hours on their deck “keeping an eye” on their neighborhood. Mike enjoyed playing Scrabble, working crossword puzzles, Kansas City Royals baseball, and Husker football. In 2014, Mike and Ruth moved to Prairie View Assisted Living in Tilden. In May, 2017, after suffering a stroke, Mike moved to Community Pride in Battle Creek.
Survivors include his children, Rita and husband Ted Griess of Minden, Nebraska, and Ronn and wife Deb of Tilden; grandchildren, Gunnar Qualset and wife Sandra of Tilden and Jade and husband Travis Tangeman of Papillion, Nebraska; great-grandchildren, Jack, Joni, and Jaron Qualset and Russell and Quinton Tangeman; step-grandchildren, Cassandra Kanter, Tony and Amy Griess, and Chandra and Paul Maraman; step-great-grandchildren, Baxter and Parker Kanter, August, Vivian, and Anton Griess, and Sheridan and Lydia Maraman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Maxine Magwire and Dean and Colette Magwire of Lincoln, Margaret Paulsen of O’Neill, and Irene Martin of Neligh; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on October 8, 2016; his parents, Gunder and Sophie; his parents-in-law, Vess and Alma Magwire; his brother, Leonard Qualset; a baby brother; in-laws, Florence and Emil Dittrich, Milan and Mildred Magwire, Raymond and Margaret Magwire, Edwin Paulsen, Marian and Alfred Lingenfelter, Eugene Martin, Marlene Magwire, and Euna Elaine Magwire; and step-grandson, Jeremy Griess.
