KEARNEY, Neb.  – A local daycare owner said she’s not guilty of child abuse charges in connection with an incident last month in which four children in her care were found unsupervised a mile way.

Police said the group included two five-year-olds, a six-year-old and an eight-year-old.

Meredith Spencer, 41, of Kearney is charged with four misdemeanor counts of child abuse and neglect. She pleaded not guilty to each charge. A trial has been scheduled for November. If convicted on all four misdemeanor charges, Spencer could get up to four years in jail and $4,000 in fines.

The incident took place July 13th when police responded to 17th Avenue and 56th Street in Kearney around 12:15 p.m.

A passerby spotted the kids walking along the busy street and called police

Police said they have no previous records with Spencer’s daycare.

The Department of Health and Human Services had no disciplinary actions pending against Spencer at the time.

The children were unharmed.
