KEARNEY, Neb.- A Swan was attacked and killed by a dog without a leash this week at the Yanney Park lake.

The swan named”Ike” was with his companion, “Tina” protecting their nest in an island in the south section of the lake when the dog crossed the water and went on the attack.

The city code states: “No owner shall cease to exercise proper care and control of their animals or allow them to become a public nuisance.”

Park and recreation rules say: “No person should tie or loosen any animal of any kind in a city park. Dogs will be allowed if they are kept in a belt by a lace or chain, except for dogs of Assistance, certified or in areas specifically designated for the exercise or training of pets,” such as the Meadowlark Hills Dog Park.

The Kearney Parks Department is keeping an eye on Tina. A decision regarding Ike’s replacement is being considered with help from zoo officials.

No word yet on the dog or its owner, if there is one.
