SCHUYLER, Nebraska. – The first Latino appointed to the Schuyler City Council says the mayor’s decision took him by surprise.

“It was something unexpected,” says Antonio Rodriquez Schuyler City Council Ward 2. “I wasn’t expecting it, I learned of it once Johnson announced he is moving out of the ward.”

Rodriquez ran for the council  last November but lost by a small margin.

“I never believed this would happen,” Rodriguez tells me. ” When I got the mayor’s called it was a surprise. He told me that it was a good opportunity and he wanted me to take the position.”

” Well, they’re two-thirds of our population,” says Mayor Reineke. “They probably ought to be two-thirds of our city council and other boards too.”

Rodriquez first council meeting is a special session Tuesday night.
