Trevor Sok’s accused murderer says he’s not guilty

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – A Grand Island man is going to trial for murder in connection with a New Year’s day shooting death.

Herbey Portillo, 24, is charged with felony first degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. He was arrested after the shooting death of Trevor Sok, 19, in the early morning hours of New Year’s day.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday morning in Hall county district court. A judge scheduled an August trial for Portillo.

If convicted on the murder charge, Portillo could get life in prison.

Grand Island Police said the shooting happened at 1303 W. Charles St. around 3:45 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Emergency personnel responded and found Sok, 19, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to the CHI Health St. Francis Emergency Room where he died from his injuries.

Sok was a 2017 graduate of Giltner Public Schools.
